Chiropractic Adjustments

Horses are very versatile and athletic animals. Like many human athletes, many of our equine athletes can benefit from chiropractic adjustment. Like humans, horses can also develop musuloskeletal pain that can hinder their performance.

Chiropractic offers tremendous potential in animal health care.  It belongs in the health care spectrum along with medicine, surgery, acupuncture, homeopathy and other such modalities.  Chiropractic care does not pretend to encompass the entire study of health and disease, but it does offer alternative explanations for disease and provides complementary therapy.  The foundations of chiropractic philosophy are based on the intimate relationship of the spinal column to the nervous system, as well as the role of the spinal column in biomechanics and movement.

The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.  In addition, Doctors of Chiropractic recognize the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other healthcare practitioners when in the best interest of the patient.

The purpose of chiropractic is to optimize health.  The principle that guides this is the body’s innate recuperative power which is affected by and integrated through the nervous system. The practice of chiropractic includes the establishment of a [chiropractic] diagnosis, the facilitation of neurological and biomechanical integrity through appropriate chiropractic case management, and the promotion of health.

Veterinary Acupunture

Acupuncture can be described as "an ancient Oriental system of therapy".  The technique has been used on animals and humans for thousands years.  Special needles are inserted into specific points on the body to cause a desired effect. Veterinary acupuncturists use a variety of techniques to stimulate acupuncture points, including solid needles, injection of fluid into the points, electricity or heat.

Acupuncture brings about a variety of physiological changes which can be beneficial for many diseases.  For example, acupuncture can stimulate nerves, increase circulation, relieve muscle spasms, and can trigger the release of compounds such as endorphins and cortisol.

There is much we still do not understand about acupuncture and its effects, but we do know that  acupuncture can be useful in many conditions.  The most common conditions treated in veterinary medicine are neurological and musculoskeletal problems such as paralysis, arthritis, muscle injuries and vertebral disk disease.  Acupuncture can also be beneficial in gastrointestinal diseases (such as non-surgical colic, respiratory diseases (such as heaves), and some reproductive disorders.

If you have further questions about acupuncture and how it can benefit your horse, contact our clinic.
