Dr. Zach Loppnow is a Minnesota native who grew up on a farm in Lake City, Minnesota. He and his family have a successful show pig business which is where his love of working with animals started. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science at the University of Minnesota and followed that with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine in 2017.
After graduating from veterinary school, he did a yearlong private practice internship at Anoka Equine in Elk River, Minnesota where he stayed on as an associate for three more years. During this time, his love for surgery grew and eventually led him down a path towards becoming a board-certified surgeon. He left private practice to complete another internship at Iowa State University's Lloyd Large Animal Hospital, after which, he was accepted into a residency in Equine Surgery at Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics in Salinas, California.
Completing his three-year residency on California's Central Coast, he came back to his Minnesota roots, accepting a position as the surgeon at Stillwater Equine Veterinary Clinics. His professional interests lie in arthroscopic and soft tissue surgeries. He has published multiple academic papers, including original research on intravenous regional limb perfusion application in synovial sepsis, and been a contributing writer for equine veterinary textbooks. Dr. Loppnow is an accomplished speaker presenting nationally at the AAEP and ACVS Annual Conferences, regional continuing education events, and to students at multiple veterinary schools across the country.
Outside of his career, Dr. Loppnow has been joyfully married to his wife Krista since 2018, who has supported him at each step of his career. Her support was invaluable in the multiple moves across the country and especially in the rigors of surgical residency. Together, they enjoy traveling to national parks, getting out for hikes, cooking delicious foods, and spending time with family and friends. Dr. Loppnow is still very active in his family's show pig operation and occasionally accompanies his father to national shows.
